I’ve gotten several questions about this and I haven’t gotten the chance to answer because I’m always pressed for time so I apologise for that. Honestly, the movie was ambiguous to me as well.
I think it was Lucy ‘punishment’ for being curious to know what happens when she is drugged. In the situation, the men have the dominance over her because she is asleep. It’s like a complete submission. You know that line Rachel Blake keeps saying to the men, something like ‘no one is judging you here’, it’s because it’s supposed to portray (in a sort of ironic way) how men are ~vulnerable when it comes to their sexual urges. No one is going to judge them there because the other person doesn’t know what’s going on and can’t react on things. That’s how it’s supposed to stay. Lucy, by trying to see what she is not supposed to see, is like taking that ~power~ away from the men. Also I think there’s something in the irony of the fact that she’s getting really curious about what goes on when she’s drugged that she goes as far as to plant a hidden camera only to show in the end that nothing really happened at that particular moment because the guy self-terminated (and maybe that’s why they showed the camera footage — she wanted to know but nothing happened). That’s what I got from it anyway. And from reading several reviews, I must admit.
But there’s a completely different explanation that makes a lot more sense here so make of it what you will.
